Reciprocity

Canada

All Provincial and Territorial Licensing Authorities, except British Columbia, have adopted the ExAC. A licensed Architect in a Canadian Province/territory who became an Architect after the completion of the ExAC will be recognized in British Columbia under the reciprocity agreement between the Canadian Architectural Licensing Authorities.

For the present, Canadian Provincial and Territorial Licensing Authorities continue to accept the Architect Registration Examination (ARE) of the National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) as meeting Canada’s reciprocity requirements.

United States

At present, the examination requirement to obtain an NCARB Certificate for a Canadian Architect will continue to be the ARE.  In future, it is anticipated that Provincial and Territorial Licensing Authorities will negotiate the terms of a reciprocity agreement which will define the criteria of licensure for architects from the United States who come to Canada and for Canadian architects who go to the United States, so that it will include the ExAC.
